Haring Center

Conducting Research

Our researchers team up with the teachers and administrators of the Haring Center’s inclusive school, the Experimental Education Unit, to support educational research at the University of Washington. Any faculty or student interested in doing research at the Haring Center EEU must submit a request through the process outlined below. The Haring Center also may be able to share relevant research opportunities with our social media communities. If you would like your research opportunity to be shared on Haring Center social media, please complete this brief application. For support or questions about Haring Center research, please contact Director of Research, Angel Fettig.

Applying to Conduct Research at the EEU:

Step 1: Prepare your application and meet UW research requirements

  • All UW researchers are required to comply with UW’s Administrative Policy Statement 10.13. For most research with children at the EEU, this means you must register your research with the Office of Youth Protection. All members of your research team must complete some training requirements and background checks. This can take some time, so please plan ahead. Contact the UW Office of Youth Protection Coordinator with questions.
  • If you are Haring Center faculty or staff and need to pay for background checks for your team, please contact the Haring Center Director of Research.
  • If relevant, ensure your project has been reviewed by the Institutional Review Board.

Step 2: Complete the research application.

Any researcher interested in doing research at the Haring Center EEU must submit a request using this form well in advance of their anticipated start date.

Step 3: Meet with the EEU Research Team

  • Following submission of your research application, you will be contacted by the HC research team to schedule a brief meeting to share more about your project and the needs of your study.
  • Following approval of research via email from HC research team, you will work in coordination with EEU leadership and the EEU research team to plan and implement your study. This may include ongoing email check ins, brief meetings, etc.

Step 4: Share information about your project

  • In the spirit of collaboration with teaching teams, we ask that researchers create a brief, 1/2- 1 page document to share with HC EEU teams describing your research project, as well as the goals and objectives of the proposed project prior to the start of your approved project. Once your research is completed, we ask that researchers share their findings in a brief, 1/2 -1-page document with HC EEU team that participated in implementation of your research.
  • If you are using flyers for recruitment, we ask that you print your flyers and bring them to the HC EEU for distribution into classrooms.
    • Flyers should be bundled by class sizes. Reach out to EEU front office for numbers. Generally, we have 2 Kindergarten classes of 18 and 5 Preschool classes of 16. It is always a good idea to send a few extras!
  • Flyers can also be posted on community bulletin boards pending approval by the HC research team.
